Upgrading the IT
facilities of an Air Training Corps Squadron in the South West is being
funded to the tune of £400 through BT’s Community Champions scheme.
A member
of the work management team at Exeter, Rick Webb applied for the money on
behalf of the 1322 (Newton Abbot) Squadron.
Rick, a
former cadet who is now the commanding officer of the squadron said: “I’m
absolutely delighted. It means the youngsters will benefit from enhanced IT
equipment which will help with their education and enjoyment.”
Apart
from training on aviation subjects and RAF related topics, the 60 or so
youngsters aged from 13 to 20 can follow a BTEC course, the extra IT will
enhance their ability to succeed. “We are also involved with the Duke Of
Edinburgh Award Scheme, several community organisations in Newton Abbot,
including the British Legion who we are affiliated with. We have also been
honoured by Newton Abbot Town Council for our community work and all are
members are “Honorary Citizens of Newton Abbot” the highest accolade the
council can award to an organisation within the town.” added Rick.
Over the
next few months, members of the squadron will be taking part in Ten Tors on
an endurance event on Dartmoor. Others will be travelling to the Netherlands
to participate in the Nijmegen March, a 100 mile walk in support of a
veteran’s charity. Others will be visiting RAF stations for a week and
learning the RAF way of life. The Squadron also help at the Royal
International Air Show at RAF Fairford during July.
Recently,
the squadron was honoured – for the second time – as the best unit in the
Wing, which covers 30 units in the counties of Devon and Somerset. |
