1322 (Newton Abbot) Squadron

Air Training Corps

Memorial Stone Dedication

1322 members  were keen to support  the idea of a local memorial for those that gave their lives in recent conflicts. As Honorary Citizens of Newton Abbot & Affiliated members of  the local Newton Abbot British Legion we helped the idea to fruition - in fact the Squadron even made a donation towards the cost of the Memorial Stone.
Cadets from Air Training Corps squadrons across South Devon attended the Dedication of a new Memorial Stone at Newton Abbot War memorial on Sunday 29th January 2006.
The first name to be added was that of Chief Technician. Richard Brown who grew up in Newton Abbot and who was killed in an RAF Hercules that was brought down 30km North of Baghdad in Iraq on 30 January 2005

ATC Cadets joined serving RAF personnel, members of Richard’s family and other families directly effected as a result of the Hercules being shot down in Iraq. All three armed services were represented with local youth organisations and other town’s citizens attending the service of dedication organised by the Town Council and the British Legion.

On the Way to the War Memorial
1322 Members provided the Guard at the War memorial they were so good they were mistaken for members of the RAF.

We will Remember them

Poignant moment when the lone RAF Hercules from RAF Lyneham flew over the memorial in tribute.
lets pray for peace and hope no more names are added in the future.
The stone will be engraved with other local names of those who have died in the service of their country since 1945. We have recently heard of the possibility of  three more names to be added to the stone two of them former members of 1322. When names are verified I am sure the Squadron will attend a short service at the War Memorial in their honour.
