Duke Of Edinburgh Walks are a Success

Ten Cadets from 1322 Newton Abbot Squadron completed their bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh expeditions on the weekend of the 18th August 2006.

The ten cadets were split into one bronze and two silver teams prior to their walks on Exmoor. The cadets who took part in the Bronze team were, Cadets Chris Oliver, Tom Oliver, Elizabeth Lloyd and James Hilliard-Smith. The cadets in the two silver teams being, ICWO Paul Bond, ICWO Daniel Greening, Flt Sgt Anthea Webb, Sgt Siobhan Flanary Cpl Oliver Deavin, Cpl Josh Chambers, Cadets Lauren Deer and Ryan Beer.

The Duke Of Edinburgh award scheme celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and was set up in order to provide young people with an enjoyable but challenging and rewarding programme of personal development.

The cadets from 1322 Sqn, whose ages range between 14-19, had been in preparation for the expedition months beforehand. The purpose of walking on Exmoor was so that they could study three things,

·        The effects of tourism on the area

·        The uses of the land

·        The Geology

The Bronze team had to walk 15 miles in two days and the silver teams had to walk 30 miles in three days. Both the Bronze and the Silver teams completed their walks in the required time.

CWO Daniel Greening said, ‘All members of the teams, both Bronze and Silver found the walks challenging but very rewarding. Everyone had great fun and the teamwork was excellent.’
